What is Biochar?
Biochar is a carbon‑rich soil amendment made by burning organic materials (like wood or plant waste) in a low‑oxygen environment. We use aged alder bark.
Why is biochar used?
Biochar is added to soil to improve:
- Soil structure — increases aeration and drainage
- Water retention — helps soil hold moisture longer
- Microbial activity — supports beneficial microorganisms
- Nutrient efficiency — reduces nutrient leaching and improves fertilizer performance. Helps plants absorb nutrients by increasing the cation exchange capacity.
Benefits in landscaping & gardening
- Helps plants establish faster
- Improves sandy or clay soils
- Increases long‑term soil fertility
- Reduces watering needs
- Long‑lasting (does not break down like compost)
- Our black mulch and Organic plus has biochar.
